With seed funding from UJA-Federation of New York, "Sosúa: Dare To Dance Together" is the highly praised outcome of an intergroup relations initiative that began in September 2009. Sosúa is an original musical production directed by the renowned Liz Swados. Based on historical events leading up to World War II, the performance tells the story of how the Dominican Republic was the only western hemisphere country to welcome Jewish people that were fortunate enough to escape from Germany prior to the Holocaust.

Approximately 20 teens have been selected each year, after an extensive audition process, for the Sosúa troupe. The youngsters have research assignments, study sessions, and weekly rehearsals, culminating in final performances. Now in its third year, Sosua was presented to audiences at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Queens College, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the JCC of Manhattan and at the Columbia University Medical Center Alumni Auditorium as part of the 2011 Teatro Stage Fest. Sosúa has been nominated for the Literary Award “The Truth about the Holocaust and Stalinist Repression” for its strong educational message and impact on youth. The Y has been invited to perform on Holocaust Remembrance Day at the United Nations, Jewish Heritage Museum, and the 92 Street Y. Our leadership is in the process of discussing possibilities of bringing the show to Washington DC and the Dominican Republic.
