Drive for Puerto Rico
One of the mitzvot (good deeds) associated with Purim is matanot l'evyonim which means giving to those in need. Following Hurricane Maria’s devastating blow to Puerto Rico, island residents are facing a long road to recovery. For Purim this year we and our local partners are inviting the community to come together in support of the hurricane victims by bringing items that are still desperately needed. The drive will culminate in a collection revealing at The Y Purim Odyssey carnival on Sunday, March 11. Afya Foundation will then transport and deliver the collection to Chabad of Puerto Rico, who in turn will distribute the items where they're needed most.
And what's more, get a raffle ticket for your donation! The winner will be selected and announced at The Y Purim Odyssey carnival on Sunday, March 11 at 2:45 pm. You, or a proxy, must be present at the drawing in order to win.
Our Partners and Sponsors
The Jewish community of Upper Manhattan is coming together to support Puerto Rico's citizens as they recover and rebuild their lives. The following synagogues will be collecting items in the week leading up to our Post-Purim Carnival and will join us on March 11 to host activities.
Our drive wouldn't be possible without Afya Foundation and Chabad of Puerto Rico. Afya has years of experience responding to crises worldwide; since Hurricane Maria hit, the foundation has sent numerous flights to Puerto Rico and St. Thomas deliver supplies as part of the relief effort. Afya generously donated space on their cargo flight for our collection
For the past five months, Chabad of Puerto Rico has been tirelessly supporting residents across the island of all backgrounds through the distribution of meals, generators, and supplies. In addition to continuing this distribution, now they are also involved with restoration projects. Chabad of Puerto Rico will distribute our collection to rural and coastal regions on the island.
