The Y: Celebrating 100 Years of Pioneering Programs
The Y was established in 1917 as a multi-service community center to provide educational, recreational, and social services. In 1930 the Y established the first “home camp” for city children who could not afford to attend camps in the country. From the beginning, the camp aimed to create a space for children where they could be outdoors, play, create, and socialize.
Today, we still believe that summer should be a joyous time when children can play and explore the world around them within a warm and emotionally supportive environment. Footpaths Nursery Camp consciously nurtures children’s social, intellectual, physical, and aesthetic development. Our Jewish values guide us as we teach campers to care for themselves and the earth, to pursue learning, and to create a warm and welcoming community. Footpaths embraces diverse families from all backgrounds.
The Footpaths Approach – A Stimulating Adventure
By engaging in developmentally appropriate and enriching activities, children are immersed in the world around them through 5 Zones of Learning. Our daily schedule includes open and structured activities: creative art, science explorations, gymnastics, music, water fun with our sprinkler system, and more. At the end of every week there is a special pizza lunch to welcome Shabbat.
5 Fun, Immersive Zones of Learning
Play: Our playgrounds and indoor gym are perfect areas for gross motor experiences. Children interact with one another as they play cooperative games. They stay active as they dance, tumble in gymnastics, and learn new yoga poses.
Grow: Footpaths cultivates a sense of wonder as campers tend to our rooftop garden, watching crops sprout, bud, and grow over the summer. They enjoy the fruits of their labor by eating healthy food harvested at the end of the season.
Discover: Footpaths fosters your child’s sense of curiosity. Campers experiment, observe, and speculate. Together we build, analyze, and design as we dig into mathematical and scientific concepts.
Explore: Summer is all about exploring the great outdoors! Campers learn more about our community as they journey through the neighborhood and local parks.
Create: We unleash your child’s inner artist! Children’s imaginations run free as they use a variety of materials for visual and performing arts projects.
Campers Led by a Trained, Professional Staff
Our unmatched ratio of staff to children affords us the ability to individualize our teaching to each child. Our staff members are carefully selected to work with our campers. Every room has a master's level early childhood teacher, an assistant teacher, and counselors.
A Rich Offering of Daily Enrichment Activities
At Footpaths our open and welcoming community consists of children, parents, teachers, staff, and partners who enhance our summer camp offerings. Children born in 2014 and 2015 participate in instructional swimming classes at the neighboring Riverdale Y. Creative movement and music specialists work to engage children's bodies and imaginations. Our 4 and 5 year old campers visit Camp Twelve Trails to get a taste of what our upstate New York day camp has to offer.
A Place that Encourages Exploration
The wings on the first and second floors provide a natural environment within a safe setting for children to inquire, interact, and learn. Newly constructed, air-conditioned classrooms have enhanced security, large observation windows, and bathrooms. Our two playgrounds, rooftop garden, and full-sized gymnasium provide daily opportunities for large motor development.
Registration opens in early November. Children are accepted into the program on a rolling basis until we are fully enrolled. In order to secure a spot, a $250 deposit must be included along with the completed registration form. Financial assistance is available for families with documented need; applications must be submitted by April 15, 2020.
